“That’s the Spirit”

36″ x 36″ Acrylics – [2013]

This is a painting of a dream I had of the spiritual beings who affect my life, riding with me on the carousel of life. I added the St. Bernard at the request of my precious granddaughter, Ella.  And my three cats, Harry, Angel Pie and Leo look on….as well as beloved toads.

“Day of the Dead”

18″ x 24″ – Acrylics [2012]

Shortly after my niece died, a black butterfly showed up in my yard.  It followed me as I moved from garden bed to garden bed and was with me for several days.  I asked, “Is that you, Mira?” as I had had other experiences in nature that I felt were connected to her spirit.  I chose the Mexican tradition of celebrating Dia de los Muertas to honor, remember, and welcome her spirit.  On their altars, they include four elements:  Earth (represented by crops,) Wind (represented by a moving object – note the feather dropping from the crow,) Water (I am offering her spirit water in a glass,) and Fire (candles lit in her honor.)  Brigid’s cross is on the altar….  A crow actually did drop a feather next to me during this week of the butterfly interactions.

“Guided Meditation”

30″ x 40″  Acrylics [2012]

This painting represents my process when I was in a writing group and was guided into meditation.  I always became a squirrel who fluffed out her tail and sat in a rocker in a cozy den.  When asked to go deeper, I became the figure at the bottom of the painting with a leopard about to board the boat to go down into the bowels of the earth.  Brigid watches over me, as always.  The owl is a symbol of the magic that was a part of the writing group.

“Lizards and Sachet”

16″ x 20″  – Acrylics [2012]

This is a painting of a dream.  I walked into a store and found the water pistols and sign asking me to give the lizards a drink.  The sachets had real flowers on them….

“Toad Heaven”

16″ x 20″ – Acrylics [2011]

This is a painting of me in my garden appreciating my toads.  In Spring, I had hundreds of them.  In Summer,  the population grew smaller as egrets, etc.  discovered my yard.  Brigid watches over us.  The toads are curious and come to watch me when I work in the soil.  I love them!

“Clang!”

16″ x 20″ – Acrylics [2011]

When I was almost two, I fractured my skull and spent two months in the hospital.  They made me wear a strait-jacket.  I dealt with it by singing and my favorite song was The Trolley Song:  “Clang, clang clang went the trolley!”  I love the spirit I had that made the best of the situation!

This is an image from a dream I had about my beloved niece, Mira,  looking triumphant!

“Laissez Les Bon Temps Roulez”

16″ x 20″ – Acrylics [2011]

This is a painting of some of my favorite things about New Orleans.  I was lucky enough to visit there five times pre-Katrina and think it is the most wonderful city in the United States!  A generous friend made this possible, and she is toasting with a Bloody Mary near the bottom of the painting.  My niece who loved the town, too, is shown behind a curtain, rounding a corner.  She died six years ago at the age of 28.  The goddess is wearing her Mardi Gras mask and sending blessings in the form of confetti over the town to prevent any more harm…..  I love New Orleans

“Arline’s Magic Parasol”

16″ x 20″ – Mixed Media  [2010]

This painting is my wish for my dear friend Arline.  I would like to give her a magic parasol to keep the ills of the world away and give her a happy heart always!

“A Dream About Purple Boots”

16″ x 20″ – Acrylics   [2009]

I dreamed I saw a woman carrying bags of living koi, and she was naked except for flowered purple boots and a matching purple hat.  She was taking the fish home to live in her pond.
